What is Lorsban?
Lorsban is the market name for Chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide patented in 1966 by Dow Chemical Company. Lorsban quickly kills invasive insects by attacking the nervous system and penetrating the surrounding soil, providing long term protection from common pests. According to the EPA, Chlorpyrifos is the “most used conventional insecticide” in the U.S. with roughly 6 million pounds used on around 10 million acres between 2009 and 2013.
Chlorpyrifos affects the nervous system of people, pets, and other animals the same way it affects the target pest. It’s most efficiently absorbed by inhalation or ingestion. Because it is largely used on and around farm lands, agricultural employees are at highest risk of exposure -- either by direct handling or crop duster blowover. Residue can also be tracked into the employee’s home even if they do not live on the property where the insecticide application occurred, which means their children are also vulnerable to exposure.
Signs and symptoms of acute exposure can appear within minutes and range in symptoms. Many people experience respiratory problems along with swelling around the eyes and vomiting. These effects can last for days or even weeks. During this time, the body is replacing the depleted enzymes in the nervous system so it can function normally again. Even worse, some children are exposed over long periods of time without immediate signs resulting in lasting cognitive harm. Even without pronounced reaction symptoms children exposed to Lorsban during pregnancy or up to age 5 have a high rate of learning disabilities and cognitive impairment.
